A Signing space model for the interpretation of sign language interactions

چکیده
Sign language processing is often performed by processing each individual sign. Such an approach relies on an exhaustive description of the signs and does not take into account the spatial structure of the sentence. In this paper, we will present a general model of sign language sentences that uses the construction of the signing space as a representation of both the meaning and the realization of the sentence. We will propose a computational model of this construction and explain how it can be attached to a sign language grammar model to help analysis of sign language utterances. We describe the architecture of an image analysis system that performs sign language analysis by means of a prediction/verification approach. The system uses the model of sign language structure during analysis for predicting visual events, so that simple 2D features can be used to determine whether the image corroborates the prediction or not. متن کاملSign Language Generation in an ALE HPSG
During the past fifty years sign languages have been recognised as genuine languages with their own syntax and distinctive phonology. In the case of sign languages, phonetic description characterises the manual and nonmanual aspects of signing. The latter relate to facial expression and upper torso position. In the case of manual components these characterise hand shape, orientation and positio...
متن کاملThe influence of visual feedback and register changes on sign language production: A kinematic study with deaf signers.
Speakers monitor their speech output by listening to their own voice. However, signers do not look directly at their hands and cannot see their own face. We investigated the importance of a visual perceptual loop for sign language monitoring by examining whether changes in visual input alter sign production. Deaf signers produced American Sign Language (ASL) signs within a carrier phrase under ...
متن کاملImitation, Sign Language Skill and the Developmental Ease of Language Understanding (D-ELU) Model
Imitation and language processing are closely connected. According to the Ease of Language Understanding (ELU) model (Rönnberg et al., 2013) pre-existing mental representation of lexical items facilitates language understanding. Thus, imitation of manual gestures is likely to be enhanced by experience of sign language. We tested this by eliciting imitation of manual gestures from deaf and hard-...
متن کاملThe ATIS Sign Language Corpus
Systems that automatically process sign language rely on appropriate data. We therefore present the ATIS sign language corpus that is based on the domain of air travel information. It is available for five languages, English, German, Irish sign language, German sign language and South African sign language. The corpus can be used for different tasks like automatic statistical translation and au...
